Similar to continuous fibre, chopped carbon fibre generally has been coated with a sizing agent in order to enhance the bonding of the fibre strands into the composite matrix.  Chopping lines generally come in two configurations, direct chopping and thermal chopping:

Direct Chopping Line – where continuous carbon fibre, coated with an appropriate sizing agent and normally wound on bobbins, are fed directly into a chopping system. A direct chopping line typically consist of a creel to unwind the spools of carbon fibre, fibre drive stands, chopping heads, classification, metals removal, and packaging.

Thermal Chopping Line – where continuous carbon fibre, either without sizing or with an inappropriate sizing, and wound on bobbins, must be recoated with sizing prior to chopping.  A thermal chopping line typically consist of a creel to unwind the spools of carbon fibre, a burn off oven to remove an existing size, a sizing bath, a sizing dryer, fibre drive stands, chopping heads, classification, metals removal, and packaging.
