Accumulators are used to provide a buffer for the processing continuous materials, filaments or fabrics. The accumulator typically involves multiple passback rollers, with at least 1 of the rollers mounted on a moveable frame or moving bearing mount. Movement of a passback roll allows the continuous material to flow into the accumulator without requiring the material flow into or out of the accumulator.
The accumulator capacity is defined by the number of moving passback rollers and the length of the travel path for the moving roll.
Accumulators are often used to manage the start/stop frequency of semi-continuous equipment within a processing line. Accumulators can also be used to provide the operator with enough time to perform an equipment change-over, for example, change a feed and splice or change, without needing to stop the flow of material in the production line.
